Refill Your Water Bottle

Part of The Village Refill Guides – practical ideas for reducing waste, one small step at a time.
Stay Hydrated Without the Plastic
Around 7.7 billion plastic water bottles are bought in the UK every year, many of them used just once before being thrown away.
Staying hydrated is important, but it doesn’t have to mean buying bottled water every time you’re out and about.
Carrying a reusable water bottle is one of the simplest swaps you can make. It’s better for the environment, kinder to your wallet and means you’ll always have water close to hand.
Refill, Don’t Replace
Before buying a new reusable bottle, check whether you already have one tucked away in a cupboard.
The most sustainable bottle is the one you already own and use regularly.
If you do need to buy a reusable bottle, choose one that’s built to last, easy to clean and a pleasure to carry every day. Whether it’s stainless steel, glass or BPA-free reusable plastic, a well-made bottle can last for many years, making it a worthwhile investment for both you and the environment.
Refilling Is Easier Than You Think
More and more cafés, refill shops, visitor attractions and public spaces are happy to refill water bottles free of charge.
Many towns and cities also have public drinking water fountains, making it easy to top up while you’re out exploring.
Planning ahead means you’re less likely to buy bottled water on impulse.
Find Refills Wherever You Go
The free Refill app, by City to Sea, makes it easy to find places to top up your reusable water bottle while you’re out and about. It shows thousands of participating cafés, shops, refill stations and public drinking water fountains across the UK.
We’re proud to be part of the Refill network too. If you’re visiting us at Yarnton Home & Garden, you’ll find us on the app and you’re always welcome to pop in and refill your water bottle.
Whether you’re exploring somewhere new or simply out for the day, it’s well worth downloading before you head off.

Take Your Bottle on Holiday
Your reusable water bottle isn’t just for everyday life—it’s a great travel companion too.
If you’re flying, simply take your empty bottle through airport security and refill it at one of the free drinking water stations before boarding your flight. It’s an easy way to stay hydrated without buying bottled water at the airport.
If you’re travelling abroad, check whether the local tap water is safe to drink before refilling. In many destinations it’s perfectly safe, while in others you’ll need to use filtered or bottled water instead.
A reusable bottle is one of the easiest ways to reduce waste, save money and stay hydrated wherever your travels take you.
Make Water More Enjoyable
If you’re not keen on the taste of plain tap water, try naturally infusing it with fresh fruit, herbs or vegetables. Slices of lemon, lime or orange, cucumber, fresh mint, strawberries or ginger can all add a refreshing twist without the need for sugary drinks or single-use plastic bottles.
If you’re heading out in warm weather, an insulated reusable bottle will help keep your water refreshingly cool for hours, making it even easier to stay hydrated throughout the day.
Village Refill Tip
We keep a reusable water bottle in the car and another in a backpack so there’s always one close by. Filling them before we leave the house has become second nature—and means we’re rarely tempted to buy bottled water when we’re out.
