Behind the Numbers: What Our Community Has Achieved Together
Share
Sometimes it takes stopping to count to realise just how much a collection of small actions can add up to.
Recently, while looking back at the impact of The Village Refill, we did exactly that. And one number in particular stopped us in our tracks:
More than 102,290 single-use plastic bottles avoided.
That is over 102,290 occasions when someone chose to refill rather than buy a newly packaged product.
But while it is a number we are incredibly proud of, it isn't really our number.
It belongs to our community.
Every bottle represents someone bringing a container back to refill. Someone choosing to reuse what they already have. Someone deciding that perhaps they didn't need another piece of packaging after all.
One refill might seem like a very small thing.
More than 102,290 of them tell a rather different story.
Why refill matters
Recycling is important, but we have always believed that prevention and reuse should come first.
When an existing bottle is refilled, we aren't simply keeping something out of the recycling or waste stream. We are avoiding the need for another single-use bottle in the first place.
That means less demand for new plastic, much of which is derived from fossil fuels, and fewer resources associated with manufacturing, packaging, transporting and eventually processing it.
Put simply, the most effective bottle to deal with is the one we never needed to produce.
It's why refill has always been at the heart of The Village Refill.
And it's why watching that number grow has meant so much to us.
Thousands of small choices
It can sometimes feel as though the environmental challenges we face are so enormous that the things we do as individuals can't possibly make much difference.
Our experience tells us something different.
The 102,290+ bottles avoided through The Village Refill didn't happen because somebody made one enormous lifestyle change.
They happened because lots of people made lots of small ones.
Remembering to bring a washing-up liquid bottle back.
Refilling the laundry liquid instead of picking up another bottle.
Reusing a shampoo container.
Trying a refill for the first time — and then coming back and doing it again.
These are ordinary decisions made by ordinary households. But repeated week after week, month after month and year after year, they become something much bigger.
That's the power of a community choosing to do things differently.
More than bottles
Of course, our impact doesn't begin and end with the refill station.
From the beginning, we've tried to look at the wider impact of the choices we make as a business — from the products and suppliers we work with to packaging, deliveries, the materials we use and the causes we support.
Through those choices, our community has also helped us contribute to the planting of 5,870 trees.
Together, we've donated more than 614 toothbrushes, helping useful everyday essentials reach people who need them.
We've supported circular systems, chosen products designed to be reused rather than discarded and continually looked for ways to reduce unnecessary packaging.
And behind all of those numbers are people.
Customers who have supported independent makers and responsible suppliers.
People who have returned containers rather than throwing them away.
Families who have introduced refill into their everyday routines.
And those who have simply walked through our doors, asked questions and decided to give something different a try.
Making sustainable living practical
We have never believed that sustainable living should be about being perfect.
For most of us, life is busy. Convenience matters. Budgets matter. And changing every aspect of the way we live overnight simply isn't realistic.
What is realistic is making better choices easier to make.
That's what we have always wanted The Village Refill to be: somewhere you can refill the products you use every day, discover thoughtful alternatives and get friendly, practical advice without judgement or pressure.
Our role is to provide the infrastructure, products, encouragement and personal support that make those choices possible.
Our community is what turns them into impact.
Taking a moment to look back
We recently brought many of these figures together as part of our entry into the Oxford Climate Awards.
Whatever happens with the awards, the process gave us something unexpectedly valuable: an opportunity to stop and look at what has happened since we began.
When you're filling containers, unpacking deliveries, helping customers and running a small independent business, it is very easy to concentrate on what needs doing next.
You don't always notice what has been happening quietly in the background.
More than 102,290 bottles.
5,870 trees.
More than 614 toothbrushes.
And thousands upon thousands of individual choices to reuse, refill and consume a little more thoughtfully.
Seeing those numbers together reminded us why The Village Refill exists.
These numbers belong to you
So, more than anything, this is a thank you.
To everyone who has brought back a bottle.
To everyone who has tried their first refill.
To those of you who have been refilling with us for years.
To everyone who has recommended us to a friend, supported the independent brands we stock, returned packaging or simply chosen to buy something that will last a little longer.
You are the community behind these numbers.
102,290 bottles is a milestone worth celebrating.
But perhaps the most exciting thing about it is knowing that the number hasn't stopped.
Every refill adds another one.
And together, we'll keep counting.
